This rugged stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way has endless golden beaches and tiny villages that make for a wonderful weekend break for exploring. With the dramatic Sliabh Liag cliffs, Glenveagh National Park and some serious craic in local pubs, Donegal is well worth a visit.

Whether you want to eat fresh seafood, go surfing or tackle a hike, Donegal is the place to be. Oh, and did we mention you can see the Northern Lights from here? It’s ideal.

1. Malin Head

The most Northern part of the island of Ireland and as rugged and wild a piece of land as you’ll ever see. The perfect spot to get a windswept Donegal Instagram shot.

2. Errigal

This strikingly beautiful 751-metre mountain near Gweedore dominates the countryside in the area. Seen in winter snowcapped, it has a near mythical appearance.

3. Fanad Head Lighthouse

Fanad Head Lighthouse is right on the northern coast of the Fanad Peninsula in North Donegal.  The Lighthouse is a signature discovery point on the Wild Atlantic Way is super photogenic.

4. Glenveagh

In an island that is full of incredible national parks, this one is hard to beat. With great fishing, hiking, bike trails and rustic places to stay, you’ll never be short of things to do – nor iconic Donegal photos to take home with you.

5. Bundoran Surfing

You might not think of surfing straight away given how cold it can get in this part of the world, but Donegal is a prime location for it. The waves can be terrific so strap on the wet suits, grab a surf board and have some fun.

6. Glencolumbkille Folk Village

This thatched-roof replica of a rural village in Ireland’s most north westerly county offers a glimpse into daily life as it was during past centuries.

The Folk Village Museum is a cluster of several small cottages, called a ‘clachan’, perched on a hillside overlooking the sandy curve of Glen Bay Beach in the Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking area) of South West Donegal.

7. The Silver Strand

Located in south-west County Donegal this is one of the prettiest beaches in the country. Come here during low season and you might just have the whole incredible sight to yourself.
