4. Cairo Citadel

Cairo Citadel is an ancient fort from the Islamic-era and was once the where the Egyptian rulers once lived between the 13th and 19th centuries. Its location was strategical in that it was high up on a hill to give it a vantage point overlooking the city for any invaders.

Today it is a preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a great place to visit.

Al Azhar Mosque is one of Cairo’s first mosques that was built in 970 AD. Today, the Mosque is an independent university that teaches religious studies as well as science and medicine.
