Nothing will get you more into the Christmas spirit than hitting up some of the best Christmas markets in Berlin. Germany is famous for its festive markets and this city certainly doesn’t let it down.

Most of the markets kick off in late November, with many running until early January. So it’s time to get planning, grab a few friends and visit one of these super European Christmas markets.

Mulled wine, gifts for loved ones and that wonderful Christmas feeling here we come…

Best Christmas Markets in Berlin

1. Gendarmenmarkt

Gendarmenmarkt is the most famous Christmas market in the city. Stroll around stands with glassblowers, winter delicacies and origami art and sip on spicy mulled wine.

The backdrop of the Französischer Dom and Deutscher Dom (French and German churches) make it extra special. Plus, jugglers, fire-eaters, choirs and classical, jazz or Gospel choirs provide entertainment programme on each market day!

2. Spandau Christmas Market

This is Berlin’s largest traditional Christmas market. For over 40 years, the Spandau Christmas market has been one of the must-see Christmas markets in Berlin. The cobblestone streets of the old town fill with up to 400 market stalls in beautiful wooden huts, with a Christmas nativity scene with live animals.

3. Berliner Hundeweihnachtsmarkt Sirius

The Berlin Christmas market scene now has something to offer for dogs. On the first Advent weekend, Berlin’s Sirius Christmas market for dogs will take place at the Forsthaus Paulsborn in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf for all dog lovers from near and far.

Expect all kinds of dog food, clothing and accessories for your four-legged friends, as well as toys and advice at their stands.

4. Christmas market at Alexanderplatz

On one of Berlin’s most famous squares, the illuminated wooden stalls turn Alexanderplatz into a winter village scented with chestnuts and punch. Enjoy mulled wine and Thuringian bratwurst, browse the 100 wooden stalls and enjoy the festive spirit with music in the background.

5. Christmas market at Charlottenburg Palace

Immerse yourself in the royal Christmas world at the former residence of Queen Sophie Charlotte, which provides the location for Berlin’s most romantic Christmas market during the Christmas season. It’s perfect for families with children: in the fairytale tent you can listen to old stories and make your own Christmas presents in the handicrafts tent.

6. Holy Shit Shopping

If you are looking for an unconventional Christmas market experience in the capital as an alternative to the traditional Christmas markets, then Holy Shit Shopping is a must-visit! 300 international designers and artists offer their very creative and high-quality products at Holy Shit Shopping over two days.

There’s also tasty seasonal street food, mulled wine, beer and schnapps.

7. Winterzauber on Deck5

Berlin’s highest Christmas market, Winterzauber on Deck5, will take place this year on the roof of the Schönhauser Allee Arcaden. There’s great Christmas gifts such as wood design, lamps, jewellery, all sorts of sweets and much more, but we’re here for the food! Feast on sausages, game goulash, tarte flambée, chimney cake, mulled wine and other treats.
