Nestled beneath snowed-covered mountains, Innsbruck offers one of the most romantic settings for Christmas markets in Austria. Twinkling lights are just the beginning to this city’s celebration. There are several markets to choose from, but the Old Town Market might be the most atmospheric.

There are 70 stalls to browse, and the entire market is known as Fairy Tale Alley, so you know it is beautiful.

49th. The Christmas Village in Philadelphia — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Basel Christmas Market is spread across three sites: the largest is on Barfüsserplatz in the old town; Münsterplatz, in front of the historic cathedral in one of the most beautiful squares in Basel, and a smaller market on the right bank of the Rhine.

32nd. Christkindlmarkt – Adelaide Hills, Australia

Hahndorf Christkindlmarkt is a European-style Christmas market based on the German town of Hahndorf. Think: traditional Christmas market vibes but in a warm Aussie setting. There’s live Nativity plays, Christmas carols and plenty of entertainment for all ages.

Local craftspeople sell their creations at more than 50 stalls, and there are lots of delicious food options as well.

31st. Christmas and Epiphany Market at Piazza Navona – Rome, Italy

According to Italian tradition, 8th December marks the start of this Christmas market, which ends with Epiphany, the evening between 5th and 6th January, when grown-ups and children await the arrival of the Befana (a kindly old witch bringing gifts).

16th. Brisbane Night Christmas Market – Brisbane, Australia

Brisbane’s popular night market gets a festive twist, with snow machines, Christmas carollers and visits from Santa Claus. There is no single Christmas market in Berlin – you can visit over 70 of them here, but our favourite is the Gendarmenmarkt, which is the most famous one in the city. Stroll around stands with glassblowers, winter delicacies and origami art and sip on spicy mulled wine.

The backdrop of the Französischer Dom and Deutscher Dom (French and German churches) make it extra special. Plus, jugglers, fire-eaters, choirs and classical, jazz or Gospel choirs provide entertainment programme on each market day!

13th. Koziar’s Christmas Village – Pennsylvania, USA

When people first catch a glimpse of this fairyland, “Wow!” is a common expression as over one million Christmas lights light up the nighttime sky.  This family-owned Christmas attraction dates back to 1948 when William M. Koziar began decorating his home and dairy farm for his family, with the display growing into this huge spectacle that it is today.

At this world-famous Christmas wonderland you’ll find a village of outdoor and indoor lights, Christmas displays, train displays, unique shops, and, of course, Santa.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Brussels during winter, you’ve got to get into the Christmas spirit at the city’s Winter Wonders markets.

While the heart of the Christmas markets is at the festive Big Wheel at Place Sainte-Catherine, there’s over 250 wooden chalets spread across the city.

Every winter the “Village of Lights” comes alive during the holidays for a unique winter experience. There’s Alpine lodge buildings and hotels, Christmas markets and Bavarian beer and food.

Booths sell sweet treats, such as chocolates, cakes, pastries, cookies and candies, with live music. The market itself is a one-day event, but honestly? The entire village is a winter wonderland for the whole holiday season.
