There are lots of added ingredients or small tweaks you can make for this recipe, but this is a wonderful base to start from. Prefer less heat? Swap the chillies out for some dried paprika. We also created this dish in one pan on the stove top instead of using the oven, which makes it even easier.
Cheat Shakshuka Recipe: Ingredients
- Red onions
- Eggs
- Kale
- Tinned chopped tomatoes
- Garlic
- Dried red chillies
- Fresh parsley
You don’t have to have the bread with it but as an extra ingredient for dunking we would seriously suggest you consider it!
Start by slowly frying off the sliced onions and garlic until soft in some olive oil. Add in the chilli flakes and cook for a further 30 seconds, before adding the tinned tomatoes.
After about 10-12 minutes on a low heat, the sauce will naturally start to thicken. Season with salt and pepper and add in the kale. It should start wilting instantly into the sauce.
If you are serving with bread (baguette or sourdough is perfect for mopping up all that sauce) drizzle with a little olive oil and fry in a griddle pan.
Turn the heat down and crack the eggs into the sauce. This might seem unusual at this stage, but the heat will slowly start cooking them as the sauce simmers below.
The eggs will start cooking and you don’t need to touch the pan at all during this process. Once you see them setting, whip it off the heat as they will continue to cook with the residual heat.
Serve the entire pan at the table, family-style with the fried bread. Sprinkle a liberal amount of the chopped parsley over the top at the very last minute.
This cheat shakshuka recipe really is the ultimate weekend treat. Enjoy every mouthful!
