Coronavirus Grocery List: 7 Essential Food Staples To Buy

Planning to stock up a potential quarantine or self-isolation? It’s tricky to think of what exactly you need for a coronavirus grocery list, so here’s seven essential food items to buy for a stockpile.

First things first: don’t panic. Don’t buy more than what you realistically need for two weeks or so. Right now, there’s no signs that any supermarkets will run out of food. Buy nutrient-rich items, but feel free to throw in some treats as well!

Coronavirus Grocery List: Essential Food Staples To Buy

1. Tinned Beans & Legumes

Stock up on kidney beans, chickpeas, black beans and the likes to mix into a hearty chilli dish, soups or stews.

2. Pasta, Brown Rice & Grains

These are true store pantry staples. Pasta is quick and filling, while brown rice and grains such as quinoa or couscous provide essential fibre.

3. Canned Fish

Add some flavour and protein to your self-isolation meals with canned tuna, anchovies or sardines. Lash these into a tomato pasta for a boost or make a fresh salad full of Mediterranean flavours.

4. Nut Butters

Nut butters are a great source of protein and healthy fats, plus they’re tasty AF. Spread them onto crunchy slices of bread, bananas or rice crackers for a delicious snack.

5. Bread (for freezing)

Pro tip: if you’re buying a baguette or batch loaf, slice it before you freeze it so you can pop each piece into the toaster to defrost.

6. Fresh Vegetables & Fruit (for freezing)

You don’t have to live on tinned goods for the entire quarantine period! Freeze fresh vegetables such as green beans, peas, carrots and spinach. Fruits such as strawberries and blueberries freeze well and can be used for a smoothie.

7. Eggs

Eggs will last for about three weeks after you bring them home, just pop them in the fridge. They’re a great source of protein and super versatile, with lots of uses in the kitchen and different recipes.
