Panama is known for its 48 miles of canal that connect the Pacific Ocean with the Atlantic Ocean. But it’s so much more than just the Panama Canal.
In Panama city, modern skyscrapers, casinos and nightclubs contrast with colonial buildings. As for outside the city? Get ready to explore the rainforest. There’s lots of things to do here that will make for a great Panama Instagram shot.
1. Pedro Mandinga Rum Bar
This artisan rum bar is in Panama City’s Casco Viejo, a UNESCO heritage old-town neighbourhood. There’s always salsa playing (sometimes from their vintage vinyl salsa record collection), and the Pedro rum is fantastic.
The best bit? They offer a six-hour long happy hour.

3. Panama Canal
Known as the ‘8th Wonder of the World’, the Panama Canal opened in 1914. It took 10 years, more than 75,000 workers and $400 million to complete.
Travelling down the entire 80km canal takes 8-10 hours. Our tip? Take a little boat trip from the city at sunset. Stunning.

A sleepy beach resort, Pedasi is the perfect place to just come and chill out. There’s a lovely stretch of beach for surfing, snorkeling and sunbathing.
The town itself is one of Panama’s up-and-coming tourist destinations. Totally charming.

5. Bocas del Toro
Bocas Del Toro is probably the most famous tourist spot in Panama after Panama City. Expect colourful wooden houses, 9 main islands to explore and remote beaches.
Be sure to visit Isla Colón for its Starfish Beach, which has sea stars on its ocean floor. Stay in a jungle lodge for the best Panama Instagram pic.

The Amador Causeway connects four tiny islands in the Pacific Ocean to the entrance to the Panama Canal.
It’s a gorgeous open area for a waterfront stroll, or you can rent tandem bikes for something a bit different. The view of the city is incredible and there’s lovely restaurants along the route.
