San Marino is a micro state in Italy that’s the third smallest country in Europe. Known for its medieval walled old town and narrow cobblestone streets, it has all of Italy’s charm and more.

It’s also an easy day trip from Florence or Bologna and you can ask the tourist department for a passport stamp as a border souvenir. You should definitely take some San Merino Instagram photos while you’re here, and these are the seven best places to do so.

1. The Three Towers

The Three Towers of San Marino are a group of towers located on the three peaks of Monte Titano. Built directly onto the mountain stone, the towers are the symbol of San Merino and provide a 360 degree view of the valley below.

2. Liberty Square

San Marino’s city square is great people-watching opportunities. Sit down at one of the outdoor cafes for an aperitivo and watch the sun set behind the City Hall.

3. Basilica di San Marino

The Basilica of San Marino is located in Piazzale Domus Plebis in the City of San Marino and is a beautiful building.

It’s one of San Marino’s most historically and religiously important churches and is still used for worship by locals.

4. Cava dei Balestrieri

This stunning 19th-century quarry is used for Italian-style crossbow shooting, rooted in the tradition of San Marino for centuries.

5. La Capanna

This gorgeous little bar and restaurant is the perfect place to stop off for some food with a view. You’ll pass by it on your way to the 1st Tower in San Merino.

They brew their own beer (that’s seriously tasty!) and specialise in piadina, which is a delicious Italian flatbread that’s great for sharing.

6. Palazzo Pubblico

The Palazzo Pubblico is the town hall of the City of San Marino, as well as its official Government Building.

The hall is open to the public to visit, and the inside is just as majestic as the exterior.

You can’t go to Italy without sampling the creamy gelato that it’s so famous for. The absolute best place for ice cream in San Marino, this local gelato store makes incredible homemade ice cream daily.
