At just over 18 hours, the world’s longest flight is a rite of passage for many East-West business travellers. Flying between Singapore and New York, the Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight was suspended on March 23rd due to COVID restrictions. Now after months, the flight will return to the skies on November 11th.
The total flight distance is 9,536.5 miles. It takes 18 hours and 5 minutes from Singapore to JFK while JFK to Singapore will take 18 hours and 40 minutes, due to the headwind.
The World’s Longest Flight is Between Singapore and New York
“Operating to JFK International Airport would allow Singapore Airlines to better accommodate a mix of passenger and cargo traffic on its services to New York in the current operating climate,” SIA says. It will also help to cater for transfer passengers at Changi Airport.
SIA also anticipates significant cargo demand from a range of industries based in the New York metro area, including pharmaceuticals, e-commerce and technology firms. The new service will provide the only non-stop air cargo link from the U.S. Northeast to Singapore, which serves as a regional distribution hub for many major U.S.-based companies.
The flight will run three times a week, using an Airbus A350-900 with 187 economy seats, plus 24 premium economy and 42 business class.
Staying Safe On Board Singapore Airlines
To put passengers at ease, Singapore Airlines is ensuring expert hygiene and safety measures for flying during the pandemic. All SIA aircraft have a sophisticated airflow management systems that replace all cabin air every two to three minutes.
In addition to all crew members wearing protective equipment such as goggles, latex gloves and masks, inflight service will minimise contact between passengers and crew members. Personal care kits comprising a face mask, hand sanitiser and a disinfectant surface wipe are also provided for each passenger.
All passengers are required to keep their masks on throughout the flight when they are not eating or drinking.
SIA currently operates nonstop services to Los Angeles.
