Can Americans Travel To Hawaii? What You Need To Know

Hawaii officials hoped to reopen the state on the 1st of September to international visitors with a valid negative COVID-19 test. However, due to continued spikes in cases, Governor Ige postponed the opening date to October.

When Will Hawaii Open for US Tourists?

As of October 15th, Hawaii is officially open for tourists.

Will You Have to Quarantine?

Current guidelines state that stateside tourists can arrive and avoid a 14-day self-quarantine by providing a negative COVID-19 test result. Hawaii’s new Pre-Travel Testing program requires all visitors to provide a negative nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) via nasal swab. The test must be performed by a CLIA-certified lab and taken within 72 hours of arrival. Without the negative test result, arriving quests will be stuck with a 14-day quarantine.

Additionally, travellers to Hawaii are required to fill out a mandatory digital health application. Travellers must complete the form at least 24 hours prior to departure and will provide passengers with a QR code scan upon arrival.

In some cases, the health department may require a second test may without notice. Check with your airline to see if they offer pre-testing. United Airlines, American Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines are all offering testing options for passengers en route to Hawaii.

 

Should I Still Book a Trip?

Tourists who plan to visit the islands in a safe and responsible way should do so. All visitors should keep in line with current CDC guidelines, avoid overcrowded areas and maintain distance in closed spaces.

With tourism at an all-time low, Hawaii has suffered countless losses this year in the hospitality sect. The string of islands is welcoming newcomers but asks that visitors join the efforts in keeping Hawaii safe.

Is it Worth it?

The state has also implemented tighter restrictions on gathering sizes in lieu of a broader shutdown. This means social gatherings have a limit of five people in residences and otherwise. Face coverings are now also required at in-person spiritual gatherings and singing and wind instruments are banned.  Additionally, certain restrictions still exist when travelling between islands. Be sure to check with local guidelines before hopping between islands.

As of October 1st, state parks have gradually reopened across the chain of islands making for ideal distanced activities. All in all, if you’re planning to visit Hawaii, take caution. If you are ready for a challenge or two along the way, it’s certainly worth the trip.
