1. Orheiul Vechi
This is arguably Moldova’s most fantastic sight – a limestone cliff where you’ll find an old monastery and great views.

2. Transnistria
This is a narrow strip of land between the Dniester river and the Ukrainian border that broke away from Moldova in 1990. As an unrecognised state, it’s somewhat stuck in time.
Old war monuments still remain, and you can take an old Soviet trolleybus to their capital city of Tiraspol.

3. Old Orhei
The ancient city of Old Orhei is an important historical site where a handful of monks still live and and worship.
The monastery is marked by a cross on a high cliff, and it’s a must-see when in Moldova.

4. Milestii Mici
Did you know that Moldova is famous for its wine? Milestii Mici is the largest underground wine cellar in Moldova, stretching on for 200km. It’s so long that the winery had to put street signs in the cellars so people didn’t get lost!

5. Tipova Monastery
This stone church is one of the oldest cave monasteries in Eastern Europe. It dates back to the 11th century and you reach the religious areas by terrifying steps built into the rock face.
The view from the top however, makes it all worthwhile.

6. Manastirea Curchi
Curchi Monastery is a monastery of monks that has five churches and a beautiful orchard.
The inside of the church is opulent, covered in gold features and mosaics. Very pretty.

7. Saharna Falls
One of the best known waterfalls in Moldova is the largest of Saharna Falls, also known as “Gipsy Hole”. The waterfall is about 8m high, with a refreshing plunge pool underneath it.
The perfect place to cool down in the summer.
