What makes Oslo come out on top? Well, The European Commission awarded Oslo the prestigious European Green Capital title for 2019. Oslo is also the “Electric Vehicle Capital of the World” and aims to become totally carbon neutral by 2050.
2. Vancouver, Canada
Vancouver is well known for its green-loving ethos. Not only does it have the lowest greenhouse gas emissions in North America, the city has ambitious plans to become zero waste by 2040.
3. Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen is a good model in terms of urban planning and design. It is also something of a transport pioneer, aiming to become the world’s most practicable city for cyclists. Copenhagen aims to be carbon-neutral by 2025 and involves its citizens in its plans to help the city become one of the most eco-friendly cities in Europe.
4. Amsterdam, Netherlands
It’s no surprise that Amsterdam places a lot of focus on living healthily. This includes promoting sporting activities and cycling, investing in sustainable initiatives like Green Roofs and recharging stations for electric vehicles. More than 2,200 wind turbines generate around 5% of the Netherlands’ electricity.

Zurich was praised in the Arcadis Sustainable Cities Index for its investment in efficient and renewable energy and its highly coordinated trams, trains, buses, and light rail systems which make public transport simple, quick, and affordable. It also has plenty of green public spaces and low levels of air pollution.

Once a coal and steel town, Essen is now one of the greenest cities in the world. Named as The European Green Capital of 2017, Essen’s eco credentials include overall energy performance, biodiversity, green urban areas, waste production and management.
