In a country so famous for its beautiful temples and incredible culture, it’s no surprise that the Buddhist temples in Yangon are a must-see. While the temples of Bagan get the most fame, there’s so many temples to see here in Yangon, so we’ve put together the ones you simply can’t miss.

1. Sule Pagoda
According to legend, this golden temple was built before the Shwedagon Pagoda during the time of the Buddha, making it more than 2,600 years old.
2. Shwedagon Pagoda
The Shwedagon Pagoda is one of the most famous pagodas in the world and can be seen from most places of Yangon day and night, as the golden roof illuminates the city.
3. Chaukhtatgyi Paya
This unique temple is famed for its 65 metre-long reclining Buddha statue, topped with a crown of crystals and other precious gemstones. People come from all over to pay tribute to the image.
4. Botataung Pagoda
This pagoda houses a sacred hair of Buddha, which you can see a shrine to inside – the Botataung Pagoda is hollow inside and you can walk through it. The temple was completely destroyed by bombing in World War II, but is now back to its former glory.
5. Maha Wizaya Pagoda
This elegant pagoda sits on a small hill opposite the famous Shwedagon pagoda. You can enter the dome, where you’ll see colourful murals of of the Buddha meditating under a Bodhi tree, the Buddha and an elephant kneeling down in front of Him.
6. Kyauktan Yele Pagoda
Okay, so this is technically an hour south of Yangon in Kyauktan Township, but it’s well worth the half-day trip. Kyauktan Yele Pagoda is on a small island in Hmaw Wun Creek;l you take a boat to reach the magnificent golden temple.
7. Baungdawgyoke Pagoda
This famous snake temple in one of the most interesting temples in Yangon to visit. There’s 50 massive Burmese pythons curling up beside the monks.
