The Scottish Highlands are a rugged and beautiful area in the North West of Scotland, with Loch Ness at their centre. They are also home to the highest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis, and the area is known for hiking, beautiful scenery and even at times skiing.

1. Steall Waterfall

A stunning cascade of water that at 120m is the second highest waterfall in Scotland. You’ll find the it in Glen Nevis near Fort William.

2. Glencoe

This is some of the best hiking in Scotland, where you will likely see deer, lakes, gorgeous mountains and endless Instagrammable scenery.

3. Loch Ness

The large deep freshwater lake is best known for the “monster” that attracts tourists from over the world. There are countless beautiful walks and things to do around the lake that are non-monster related though!

4. Ben Nevis

At 1,345 m it is the highest mountain in the UK. With a “wild heart, an adventurous spirit and a flair for drama”, the legendary peak towers above glistening lochans and deep glacial valleys.

5. Jacobite Steam Train

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!
