Where Restaurants are Reopening Around the World:
As lockdowns across the world ease, restaurants will have to decide whether to reopen or not. It’s not without its difficulties: looking at the barriers to reopening we see many operational challenges. Consumer data shows that people have an active interest in dining out, although requirements and behaviours will change.
Some countries will be more affected than others. In the UK, almost one-third of restaurant owners say they will permanently close. According to Wes Lambert, CEO of Restaurant & Catering Australia, 20-25% of restaurants in Australia could permanently close by March 2021 if tourism does not improve. Restaurants must deal with the fall-out of both short-term guest decline and the longer-term impact of fewer tourists.
Despite the data, there are some positives that restaurant owners can take consolation from: cities that experienced a 100% seated guest decline while closed and have since begun to re-open are already seeing an improvement. Naples, Italy, is now at just 21% drop, while Tampa, Florida, US, is at 49%.
The below chart shows the initial drop off, and how quickly restaurants are now reopening around the world.
