Think: watching top-drawer footy and checking out the Fab Four’s haunts during the day followed by evenings spent bantering with footy-mad locals in lively pubs and buzzing music clubs.
How To Spend 48 Hours in Liverpool
Day One:
Hit the Streets!
When you’re all done unpacking at the supremely central Adelphi Hotel, pull on your coolest trainers, hit the streets and get under the skin of this most energetic of English cities. After taking in the neo-classical grandeur of huge St George’s Hall opposite Lime Street Station, make a beeline for the waterfront where the landmark Liver Building and slightly oversized ‘Fab Four’ Beatles statue await.
Round off your orientation by taking in fine cityscape views on a trip across the river via one of the famed Mersey ferries.
Watch the Footy
Liverpool is a city that lives, eats and breathes football. Everyone – and that really does mean everyone – here is a footy fan. People identify as either a Red (Liverpool fan) or a Blue (Everton supporter). You’ll need to book ahead and pay top whack to bag a ticket but it’s worth it… The atmosphere in both stadiums is electric on match days!
Listening to Liverpool fans sing the “You’ll Never Walk Alone” in the Kop end of Anfield stadium is a true spine-tingling experience…
Have a Top Night Out on Mathew Street
Right in the city centre and teeming with bars and clubs, Mathew Street is widely considered one of the best places in England to enjoy a really top night out. An evocative mix of locals, students, out-of-towners and overseas tourists, this vibrant artery pulses to a beat that’s simply irresistible.
Be sure to catch some live music down in the hallowed arches of The Cavern Club. It’s the place where the Beatles first go the their act together.
Day Two:
Enjoy a Morning Stroll on the Beach
A short train ride from Liverpool city centre is Crosby Beach. Also known as ‘Another Place’, it’s home to 100 cast-iron, life-size figures standing forlornly along three kilometres of foreshore staring blankly out to sea. Time your visit right and you’ll get to see the eery and strangely unsettling sight of the figures disappearing under the waves as the tide creeps in. Be prepared to feel moved without really understanding why.
Hit the Museum(s)
Liverpool is home to no fewer than seven museums and galleries, all of which are absolutely free to enter. As excellent as they are, you won’t have time to see them all on this trip. Thus, we recommend making the fascinating Merseyside Maritime Museum and thought-provoking International Slavery Museum your priorities.
Oh, and perhaps try and squeeze in the awesome Walker Art Gallery, too – it is one of the finest art galleries in Europe!
Go on a Beatles Inspired Magical Mystery Tour
Whether you choose to go independently or as part of a tour, checking in at locations around the city integral to the Fab Four is a must. Away from the twin city centre delights of The Cavern Club and The Beatles Story, it’s the suburbs of Garston and Woolton that have the most to see. Paul and John’s childhood homes are here, as is Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields.
The Penny Lane Fish & Chips shop is a fitting place to stop and refuel. By all means ask for a “Fish and finger pie”…
