It’s no secret that South Africa is home to some of the world’s most exciting wines and vineyards. Wine tasting is one of the best ways to spend a day in Cape Town – discovering new wines while touring the beautiful landscape is a real highlight.
If you haven’t done a lot of wine tasting before, it might be a little daunting to explore the South African wine scene – there’s more than 2,000 vineyards and wine estates in the Western Cape!
This is where Wine Flies Wine Tours come in. Wine Flies offer unique, authentic winelands experiences with guides who are passionate about wine and know where all the hidden gems are.
Wine Flies Tours are all about trying wine in a weird, wonderful and uniquely South African way. Here’s seven reasons why their expertly boozy tours might appeal to vino lovers…
1. Wine is paired with tasty treats on every tour
At each vineyard, wine is paired with locally produced food. You’ll try world-class cheeses, local cured meats such as Biltong and artisan chocolates, all expertly chosen to go with each of the wines.

3. Wine Flies expert ‘Wine Lords’ will improve your wine ordering skills
At each vineyard you’ll do a cellar and vineyard tour, with the winemakers and Wine Flies’ Wine Lords teaching you how wine is made, how to taste wine, food and wine pairings and what bottle to order at restaurants… You’ll work your way through whites, sparkling, reds and dessert wines.

4. The tours visit smaller vineyards as well as famous ones
You’ll visit 4-5 different wine estates (famous farms and some hidden gems only known to locals) on the Day Tours. Wine Flies carefully choose all farms so that you will experience a broad spectrum of iconic estates, as well as smaller family-run farms.
5. You can choose to add on hiking or horseback riding…
Want to make your wine tasting tour even more memorable? Wine Flies offers private tours, which include a gourmet food option, a morning hike with 360-degree views of Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula and Stellenbosch or horseback riding.

6. Wine Flies even offers a special wine helicopter tour!
Imagine flying in a helicopter from vineyard to vineyard, tasting wines along the way – bliss. Glass of bubbly in hand, you can fly to the Constantia Wine Valley, or soar over Franschhoek valley.
You’ll stop for wine tastings along the way and be back in Cape Town just in time for sundowners.
7. And obviously… You’ll get to drink lots of superb local wine
Taste Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and fresh, crisp whites. You’ll also get to try MCC, which stands for Méthode Cap Classique, and is the South African equivalent of champagne.
It’s good to know that many vineyard tours off horseback riding as an option for getting around. My wife and I have always wanted to try horseback riding, and if we can do it while drinking some high-quality wine, even better. We’ll be sure to look further into our options for vineyard tours in the future.
Can’t wait to get over to South Africa to get on one of these tours. Probably need to do the hiking before the wine tasting, otherwise it will be a very very long hike.
